PETROYLE TOURINGS

In 2000, BMW invited a group of global automotive journalists to Munich to evaluate a one‑off M3 Touring it had constructed as a feasibility study. The challenge for the brand was significant: unlike its German rivals, the M3 utilised a unique bodyshell compared with the mainstream 3 Series models. Beneath the widened rear arches sat a bespoke rear suspension layout that required far more than a simple selection of bolt‑on components to make a Touring version viable.

While the journalists who attended the evaluation drive were almost universally complimentary about the M3 Touring, customer‑clinic feedback from existing BMW owners proved far more reserved. BMW concluded there was no meaningful market for such a car. The E46 M3 would therefore remain available only as a coupé and a convertible—leaving many to wonder whether a major opportunity had been missed.

To ensure the highest levels of performance and durability, we have opted to manufacture all M3 Touring‑specific body panels primarily from carbon fibre. This approach offers three key advantages. First, in many cases, carbon fibre proves more cost‑effective than steel. Second, it provides outstanding strength while significantly reducing weight, allowing us to maintain a kerb weight comparable to the original coupé. Third, the material pays homage to the legendary E46 M3 CSL and aligns with BMW’s own engineering philosophy. All Touring‑specific components—including the rear bumper, side sills, boot floor and front wings—will be produced in carbon fibre. The quarter panels will remain in steel, as per the original design, and customers may also opt for a carbon‑fibre front bumper and carbon roof. Additionally, the rear axle carrier panel has been reinforced to prevent the well‑known E46 cracking issue, with further structural strengthening added to increase torsional rigidity in the Touring shell.

Since its brief appearance, the M3 Touring concept has captured the imagination of enthusiasts across the globe. Many have longed to own such a machine, and although several individuals have attempted to build their own interpretations—with varying degrees of success—no one has ever produced a truly faithful recreation… until now.

Petroyle has invested heavily in the exacting recreation of the original factory prototype and will be offering a limited run of bespoke, hand‑built vehicles. For a fortunate few BMW aficionados, the long‑held dream of owning an E46 M3 Touring is finally becoming a reality.

One of the most technically demanding aspects of the project lies in the bodywork. Integrating the flared wheel arches, signature side grilles and custom rear bumper requires extensive engineering and meticulous fabrication. With production unit 001 now complete, we have resolved many of these challenges and are now focused on refining and streamlining the process for future builds.

Beyond an exact recreation of the prototype, every Petroyle M3 Touring is fully customisable. Clients can specify exterior colours, choose from a wide array of interior materials and finishes, and even select their preferred engine and drivetrain configuration—including the option of M‑Power V8 or V10 conversions. For those seeking a truly factory‑fresh experience, we also offer extremely rare zero‑mile S54 engines, enabling an effectively brand‑new build—something almost unheard of in the modern‑classic sector.
